StarLinX AIRsurfer
AIRsurfer is our broadband service and is only available (at this
time) in the Newtown Business sector in Newtown, PA.
AIRsurfer is a wireless service. Fed from transmitters currently
mounted on the roof of the
Newtown Athletic Center (photo right), any rooftop within line-of-sight can
get online at speeds of up to 1MB. And, since AIRsurfer is a broadband
service, prices are similar to those that you'd expect to pay for DSL
service. AIRsurfer is extremely reliable and can be installed usually
within days of placing your order. AIRsurfer is not affected by weather,
and does not suffer the same affects as those inherent with satellite
services.
AIRsurfer
customer antennas are small, almost unnoticeable from the street. Most
antennas can be installed on the side of your building or even on the
inside, facing through a window. Several factors determine the type of
antenna that is installed, including the location on the building (roof,
side, indoor, etc) as well as the distance to the nearest transmitter. In
most cases, the antenna seen in this picture (above) is most commonly
installed.
On occasion, a more advanced antenna and radio must be installed. Measuring close to the size of a sheet of paper, the antenna seen here is also not very noticeable from the street and allows for maximum flexibility during installation. This unit is almost always mounted on the roof.
How It Works...
AIRsurfer consists of a radio unit (left) and an antenna. Internet
service is delivered to the radio, which has a 10-BaseT jack that can
either connect to one single PC, or to a router... which will allow you
to connect everyone on your network. The wireless equipment remains the
property of StarLinX so you are not obligated to purchase or lease/rent
any equipment other than a DSL router (if necessary).
The
Linksys BEF-SR11 is available from StarLinX preconfigured for use as
a NAT router. This device
acts as a natural firewall and Internet sharing device. It has been
fully tested with the AIRsurfer service and is highly recommended by
StarLinX.
What To Expect From AIRsurfer...
Very simply... you
can expect highly reliable, fast Internet connectivity. AIRsurfer is
designed as a broadband service and is intended to be used for browsing
the web, sending/receiving email, and even downloading or uploading
files at high speeds. AIRsurfer is many times faster than dial-up modem
service and several times faster than ISDN.
AIRsurfer is not designed to be used to host websites or any type of high volume Internet servers. Unlike a T1, which would typically run you $1500.00 per month, AIRsurfer is not designed to provide a committed or guaranteed bandwidth rate, nor does not come with a price tag similar to that of a T1.
